Coaches Pitch Specific Rules of Play

Rule Book: Dixie Youth Rule Book, 2011

1. All team members are required to play a minimum of two (2) innings in the infield during every game. The only exception that shall be granted is if the parent/guardian of the child playing less than two innings in the infield requests that their child not play the infield for safety reasons. Failure to abide by this rule shall result in forfeiture.

2. Games called because of the time limit will be regulation games regardless of how many innings have been played.

3. If a regulation game ends in a tie, it shall be declared a tie game and will not be resumed from the point of termination. Extra innings are permitted to be played provided the time limit has not been reached.

4. Upon the first time a player slings a bat, the umpire will issue a player warning. Upon a reoccurrence by the same batter in the same game, the player will be called out. If in the judgment of the umpire this was a flagrant slinging of the bat, a player can be called out on the first occurrence. A player can also be ejected from the game for a flagrant slinging of the bat.

5. Rules for thrown balls leaving the playing field:

A. When an overthrow by an infielder to 1st base for an attempted putout leaves the fair playing area, the ball is declared a "dead ball" if, in the judgment of the umpire, the ball is not immediately playable by the first baseman or if the batter reaches first base safely. All other runners may advance to the base that they were advancing to when the ball became dead. The umpire shall be the sole judge of whether the base runner demonstrated clear intent to advance to the next base. The objective of this rule is to allow the first baseman reasonable opportunity to make a putout on a thrown ball that leaves fair territory.

B. When an overthrow by a fielder for any other purpose besides a putout on the batter at 1st base, leaves the fair playing area, the ball is declared a "dead ball." All runners (including batter) may advance to the base that they were advancing to when the ball became dead. The umpire shall be the sole judge of whether the base runner demonstrated clear intent to advance to the next base.

C. If, in the judgment of an umpire, a fielder deliberately throws a ball out of play, the ball remains in play and base runners may advance at their own risk.

6. Overthrows on a definite play at home plate shall remain alive and the base runners may advance at their own peril. The umpire shall be the sole judge of whether the throw was a definite play at home plate.

7. A team will field ten (10) defensive players when ten or more players are present. A team must have at least eight (8) players. The eighth player on defense must be a catcher. The tenth player on the defensive team must be positioned in the outfield at the same approximate depth as the other three outfielders. The tenth player on defense may not be a "short fielder" nor be positioned behind another player to form a "back up" for that fielder.
